* 2002 Olympics silver medalist * Silver medalist at 2000 Lillehammer World Cup * Bronze medalist at 2000 La Plagne World Cup * Took first place at 2000 National Trials * Won silver and bronze during 2001-2002 World Cup season * Named Ohio Firefighter of the Year in 1999 * Became firefighter in 1994 * Selected by her graduating firefighting class as Class Speaker and by instructors as Honors Graduate * Member of 1996 national handball team * Played basketball, threw javelin and high jumped at Marshall University * Direct descendant of McCoy family (of the Hatfield-McCoy family feud) * Has earned three degrees - a bachelor's from Marshall University, a bachelor's in nursing from the University of Virginia and a master's in nursing from The Ohio State University. She's also working on a doctoral degree in nursing at Ohio State. * Discovered skeleton on the Internet while doing some research to aid in fund-raising effort for the U.S. national handball team * Said there are similarities between skeleton and firefighting: "Firefighters train and train and train, because you have to be as prepared as possible before you run into that burning building. In a fire, or in the emergency room or on race day, you have to be as prepared as possible, so that everything is second nature. You have to rely on your training to keep you out of trouble." While Parsley has been concentrating on getting to the Olympics, her life was an even bigger juggling act before her pre-Olympic training. While working on her doctoral dissertation in nursing at Ohio State, she also was fighting fires - sometimes out of state - all while training to make it to Salt Lake for the 2002 Games. |
