Joseph Barber, PhD

Facing Life with Courage and Humor:
Lessons from a Psychotherapist's Journal

Dr. Joseph Barber teaches psychologists and physicians at the University of Washington Medical School. He is an award-winning author on the topic of pain management, and a former President of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.

• MIND-BODY HEALTH: SEPARATING MYTH FROM REALITY

One of the most prominent trends in the field of health and wellness is the growing awareness of the mind-body approach. However, along with the enthusiasm we are sometimes led to hasty conclusions and broad generalizations that sometimes lead to disappointment and disinterest in the field. In his provocative, challenging and often amusing presentation, Dr. Barber looks at controversial claims made in the mind-body field. He separates the fads and fallacies from a scientifically supported understanding of powers of the mind.

• LIVING BEYOND FEAR

Joseph Barber is more than an inspiring speaker and noted psychologist. He has also successfully landed a small airplane after its engine froze and lived through a serious paragliding accident. When others use swimming with sharks as a metaphor for business management, Dr. Barber has negotiated with real sharks while scuba diving in Tahiti (his advice: give them your air tank to eat first). As a respected leader in the field of psychotherapy, Dr. Barber brings his experience to bear on our own fears and how we can overcome them.

• SECRETS OF BALANCE IN WORK AND LIFE

In order to maintain the fun of our work, we need to establish clear boundaries between occupation and personal life. In fact, stress and burn-out come from work we especially enjoy, not work that doesn't interest us! This presentation goes beyond stress management advice to inspire us to live more fulfilling lives. By achieving balance and setting limits, we grow both personally and professionally.
